How I Got Hooked on Sakanaction

Sakanaction is a band that debuted back in 2007, but the first time I saw them was on the Kōhaku Uta Gassen (that famous New Year’s music show in Japan). I remember thinking, “Whoa, what a cool and stylish band!” Their music is this awesome mix of techno and pop—catchy, but if you actually listen to the lyrics, there’s a lot of depth there too.

What really pulled me in was their song for the anime Orb: About the Movement of the Earth. I watch YouTube a lot, and because of that, the algorithm started showing me stuff that people with similar tastes and around the same age were watching. That’s how I found Ichiro (the lead singer), singing Kaiju (monsters) It totally clicked with me.

When I get into something, I go all in. I started with their hits like Shin Takarajima and Wasurerarenaino, then moved on to their older album tracks—I had them on heavy rotation for days. Their sound feels new but somehow nostalgic. I loved the music video styled like something out of an ’80s Drifters (comedy group) sketch. It made me want to dance along every time.

I’ve been watching their music videos with lyrics on YouTube, singing along and just really enjoying the vibe.

Oh, and yes—I watched the anime too. But that’s a story for another time…
