My First Castor Oil Pack Experience: Gentle Detox for Liver and Womb

About six years ago, I tried a castor oil pack for the first time.
It’s a natural healing remedy popularized by Edgar Cayce, often used to support liver detox, menstrual health, and overall energy balance.

DIY Setup with What I Had at Home

Ideally, a castor oil pack involves:

  • Castor oil (cold-pressed)

  • Flannel cloth

  • Plastic wrap or cover

  • Heat source (like a hot water bottle)

But I didn’t have the perfect setup—so I improvised.
I cut up one of my son’s old soft cotton pajamas, used it as the cloth, soaked it with castor oil, placed it over my right side (liver area) and also over my left lower abdomen where I felt some tension (possibly uterus-related), then wrapped it with plastic and applied heat using a hot water bottle.

The First Night: Super Relaxing Sleep… Then Surprise Fatigue

That night, I slept deeply and quickly—partly from jet lag, yes, but the soothing warmth felt amazing.
The next day, however, I was exhausted.

Was it just the jet lag—or a “healing crisis” (a common detox reaction)?
I wondered.

The Liver-Eye Connection and Detox Signs?

According to holistic health ideas, the liver is connected to the eyes.
When the liver is overburdened, you might see signs like:

  • Bloodshot or tired eyes

  • Dark circles

  • Dull or uneven skin tone

I’ve dealt with asthma since childhood and taken various medications, which probably stressed my liver over time.
After the pack, I noticed eye redness and a strange but familiar body smell—like the kind you get when recovering from a cold.
It felt like something was being cleared out.

Cayce’s Method: 3 Days On, 4 Days Off

Edgar Cayce recommended this cycle:

  • Apply the pack 3 days in a row

  • Then rest 4 days

  • Repeat for 4 weeks

  • Then take about 3 weeks off

So I followed it for three days.
I was constantly sleepy, but in a nice, calming way—even during the day.
It felt like my body was gently rebooting.

The Olive Oil Step (That I Skipped… Oops)

On the third day, the method suggests drinking 1 tablespoon of good quality olive oil—to help flush out the toxins released.
I didn’t have any at home, so I skipped it.
(Later I found out that this step is quite important—otherwise, the detox might not fully leave the body!)

I was planning to go buy some at the mall, but a small incident came up and I had to postpone it.
Next time, I’ll be ready.

Summary: Castor Oil Pack Impressions

  • Easy to try with basic household items

  • Comforting warmth over the liver and womb

  • Possible detox symptoms (fatigue, eye redness, sleepiness)

  • Surprisingly relaxing

  • Don’t skip the olive oil at the end!

This has become one of my favorite gentle self-care tools.
If you’re curious, I recommend giving it a try—slowly, gently, and intuitively.
