A few years ago, I became curious about the Heart Sutra and started looking into it.
This short Buddhist scripture—only 262 characters long—is said to contain the essence of Buddhist wisdom.
But honestly, I couldn’t understand any of it at first.
So I went to my teacher: YouTube.
I searched for “Heart Sutra explained simply” and finally found a video that made everything click.
🕊️ A Conversation Between Kannon and Shariputra
According to the explanation, the Heart Sutra is presented as a dialogue in which Kannon (Avalokiteśvara) speaks to Shariputra, one of Buddha’s disciples.
Everything in this world is like clouds drifting across the sky—
they seem solid, yet they constantly change and have no fixed form.
At the same time, we humans have our five senses.
You are here, and what you’re feeling right now is real.
But our emotions shift from day to day:
-
Some days are painfully difficult
-
Some days bring wonderful happiness
But neither lasts forever.
That is why we shouldn’t fall into the belief that “nothing will ever change.”
Instead, if we allow ourselves to stay open and spacious,
we can reach Prajñāpāramitā, a state of deep inner peace.
🧘♀️ Reciting the Mantra
And then comes the well-known mantra:
Gate gate paragate parasamgate bodhi svaha
(gyāte gyāte hārā gyāte harasō gyāte bōji sowaka)
Roughly translated, it means:
“Go, go, go beyond—go completely beyond.
Toward awakening.”
A reminder to release our attachments and move toward clarity.
🌏 A World That Feels Fragile
As I was writing all this, another thought came to me.
Right now, it looks like most of the world is holding onto peace—
just barely.
Yet at the same time, everything feels a little tense,
as if things could shift in an instant.
There are conflicts simmering in different places,
countries are constantly watching and pressuring each other,
economies and politics feel unstable,
and social media is filled with anxiety-driven news.
It feels like walking on thin ice—
and somewhere inside, I can’t fully relax.
😔 “I want things to stay peaceful… but something feels uneasy.”
This feeling is completely normal.
It’s like our natural human safety instinct picking up signals.
-
Big changes are frightening
-
Yet something in the world feels like it’s reaching a breaking point
-
I want peace, but I’m not sure it will last
-
I want things to stay the same, but I also know they won’t
Such mixed emotions don’t mean we’re weak—
they mean we’re human.
🌿 Why the Heart Sutra Speaks to Us Now
The Heart Sutra tells us:
“Things will change.
But if you don’t let the changes control you,
you can still find peace within the shifting world.”
In uncertain times, it’s natural to think:
“I don’t want anything to change… I’m scared of what’s coming.”
But maybe the most important thing is to create
a place of calm inside ourselves,
even when the outside world feels unstable.
🌸 May the Spirit of the Heart Sutra Bring a Little Peace
There’s so much tension and heaviness in the world lately.
I truly hope that the gentle wisdom of the Heart Sutra
spreads even a little—
bringing calm, clarity, and peace to those who need it.
