I have been using henna to cover my gray hair about once a month.
That said, I don’t always manage to do it exactly every month. Sometimes I get lazy and let five or six weeks go by. When that happens, the gray hair around the front of my face becomes much more noticeable.
In my case, most of my gray hair is around my face, so I focus especially on the front area when I apply henna. I mix henna powder with apple cider vinegar and coffee, then apply it generously to my hair.

I used to think that because henna is a natural hair dye, it would automatically be gentle on the scalp.
But later, after doing a little research, I realized that 100% henna and darker brown or black-looking henna products mixed with indigo can feel quite different.
For me, when an indigo-blended product touched my scalp too much, I sometimes felt something like a headache. From what I found, even plant-based products can cause irritation or allergic reactions depending on the person.
Also, some products called “black henna” may contain ingredients such as PPD, which can cause skin reactions in some people. So now I try to check the ingredient list carefully.
These days, I usually use 100% henna. The color comes out more reddish brown than deep brown, but for me, it feels easier to continue when I feel more comfortable about my scalp.
Henna is not a quick hair dye.
In my case, I leave it on for about an hour and a half. I cover my hair with plastic wrap, put a shower cap over it, and then pass the time by watching YouTube, doing light stretches, or cleaning the room a little.
It feels less like “just dyeing my hair” and more like a small self-care day.
Yes, it takes time. But that slow process actually suits me right now. It is not as quick as regular boxed hair dye, but I like that I can continue while paying attention to how my hair and scalp feel.
Of course, even 100% henna may not work for everyone. If you are trying it for the first time, it is safer to test a small amount first or do a patch test. If you notice itching, redness, headache, or any discomfort, it is better not to force yourself to continue.
I want to cover my gray hair, but I also want to use something that feels more natural.
For people who feel the same way, henna may be worth trying.
I am still experimenting, but I plan to keep enjoying my monthly henna time in a relaxed way.
