Today brings a New Moon in Leo — and a Total Solar Eclipse.
We have also just moved through the period often referred to as the Lion’s Gate.
Rather than expecting something dramatic to happen simply because we have reached a significant astrological date, I find myself more interested in what remains after these moments have passed.
What have I been thinking about lately?
What has quietly shifted within me?
And what have recent experiences been trying to show me?
One realization has been coming back to me:
Being serious, responsible, and conscientious is important. But perhaps being serious alone can sometimes make us surprisingly clumsy at living.
We try to do things properly.
We fulfill our responsibilities.
We try not to make mistakes.
We try not to inconvenience anyone.
None of these things are bad.
But when we become too focused on doing everything “right,” we can gradually lose touch with a much simpler question:
What do I actually want?
The Leo New Moon: Remembering Who You Are
In astrology, Leo is associated with individuality, creativity, self-expression, confidence, and the courage to take center stage in our own lives.
That makes this New Moon feel less like a moment for simply making another list of wishes, and more like an invitation to ask:
What do I genuinely want to express?
What would I choose if I were not trying so hard to meet someone else’s expectations?
Where have I been looking for approval instead of trusting my own light?
A solar eclipse adds another layer to the symbolism.
During an eclipse, the Sun has not disappeared. Its light is temporarily hidden.
Perhaps there is something meaningful in that image.
There are times in life when our direction becomes unclear. We may not know exactly what comes next. We may even feel as though the light we normally rely upon has temporarily disappeared.
But something being hidden does not mean it is gone.
Sometimes change begins precisely when we cannot yet see where it is taking us.
Not Every Beginning Looks Like a Beginning
We often imagine a new beginning as something obvious: a new job, a new relationship, a new project, a decisive choice.
But some beginnings are almost invisible.
A thought we can no longer ignore.
An old way of living that suddenly feels uncomfortable.
A realization that what once worked for us no longer does.
Nothing may appear different from the outside, and yet something has already begun to move.
Astrologically, eclipses are often interpreted as part of a longer unfolding story rather than a single-day event. So there is no need to have everything figured out today.
Perhaps months from now, looking back on this period, we will realize:
That was when I quietly started facing a different direction.
Maybe Life Needs a Little More Room
I don’t think the answer is to stop being responsible or conscientious.
Those qualities matter.
But perhaps they need some companions.
A little playfulness.
A little boldness.
A little willingness to say, “It will probably work out somehow.”
And enough space to occasionally choose what feels alive rather than what merely looks correct.
Leo reminds us that there is a difference between shining because we want to be recognized and shining simply because something inside us wants to be expressed.
Maybe that is one of the messages of this Leo New Moon and Solar Eclipse.
Not to become someone new overnight.
Not to force a transformation.
But to loosen our grip on who we think we are supposed to be — and make a little more room for who we already are.
The Lion’s Gate period has passed, and today we arrive at this Leo New Moon and Solar Eclipse.
Perhaps a new beginning does not always require trying harder.
Sometimes it begins when we allow ourselves to live a little less perfectly — and a little more freely.
