What Are Chakras? The Ancient Energy System Behind the Buzzword

You’ve probably heard the word “chakra” — maybe from yoga class, a wellness app, or even the anime Naruto. But the concept goes much deeper than fictional ninja energy. Let’s explore what chakras actually are and why so many people around the world incorporate them into their daily wellness routines.

The Origin of Chakras

The word “chakra” comes from Sanskrit and means “wheel” or “circle.” Rooted in Hindu, Buddhist, and yogic traditions, chakras are believed to be spinning centers of energy located along the body — from the base of the spine to the top of the head. There are seven main chakras, each associated with a specific color, location, emotional theme, and area of life.

Balance Is the Key

Chakras can be overactive, underactive, or blocked — and none of those states feel great. The goal is balance. Since learning about chakras, I started taking Reiki classes and now practice chakra care every morning and evening by placing my hands over each energy center. It’s become one of my favorite wellness rituals.

Other ways to care for your chakras include:

  • Meditation — visualize each chakra as a glowing, spinning light
  • Yoga — specific poses activate specific chakras
  • Crystals — use stones that match each chakra’s color (e.g., red garnet for the Root)
  • Affirmations — “I am safe,” “I am loved,” “I speak my truth”
  • Essential oils — each chakra has corresponding scents
