We’ve all heard it a thousand times:
“Walking is good for your health.”
And honestly… it really is.
It’s a full-body, low-impact aerobic workout. It boosts circulation, supports brain function, helps manage stress—and best of all, it’s free.
🚃 Back in Tokyo, Walking Was Just Part of Daily Life
When I lived in Tokyo, walking was just part of getting around.
Trains, subways, buses—everywhere you went required some walking.
I didn’t track my steps back then, but I’m pretty sure I hit close to 10,000 steps a day without even thinking about it.
🚗 After Moving to the U.S., That All Changed
Then I moved to the U.S., and… well, life revolves around the car.
Even short distances become “driveable,” and walking just stopped being part of my daily routine.
I started checking the step count on my iPhone’s Health app and, honestly, some days are shockingly low.
Of course, I’m not always carrying my phone, so it’s not 100% accurate—but unless I actively set time aside to walk, I almost never reach that “10,000 steps” goal.
Even on days when I feel like I’ve walked a lot, I’ll check and see… 6,000 steps at most.
🛍 Surprisingly Good Walking Spots: Costco & Malls
One accidental walking tip?
Go to Costco or a big mall.
Wandering around those massive spaces can add up quickly.
It’s kind of my sneaky version of a walking workout on lazy days.
⛰ A Rare Hiking Day—and a Real Reminder
Today, I went hiking for the first time in a long time.
The fresh air, the views, the sense of space—it was amazing.
But… my body reminded me just how out of shape I am. I came home exhausted.
Still, there was something satisfying about that kind of tiredness.
📝 Final Thoughts: It Doesn’t Have to Be 10,000 Steps
Sure, 10,000 steps a day is a nice goal—but I’ve found that just being a little more intentional about walking makes a huge difference.
Even five minutes outside can clear your head.
Even checking your phone’s step count can give you a gentle nudge.
So if you’re like me and sitting a little too much lately…
Why not start with just a few more steps today?
